Baby bathing features

Bathing for the newborn is a very important process, which is not only necessary for hygiene.

It develops the skeleton and muscles, strengthens nerve cells and immunity, soothes and relaxes, and improves the baby's sleep and appetite. They stabilize the blood supply and pressure, coordinate and orient the baby in space.

To ensure that bathing and swimming in the bathroom are safe and beneficial, it is important to follow a set of rules and guidelines. Parents are concerned about how to organise this procedure and how often to bathe their newborn child. Let's take a closer look at these questions.

The baby doesn't need to bathe every day unless it's necessary. It's enough to do it every two or three days. For the rest of the time, wipe the crumb with wet wipes or a damp towel. Too frequent bathing can have a negative effect on the immunity, body temperature and the protective layer of the skin, which are only formed in the first month of life.

The baby should not be washed with regular soap. In the first weeks of your life, it's enough just to wash it with warm boiled water. After a month, you can use liquid soap for children without perfumes, flavors and other chemicals.

Children's shampoo “without tears” is used after 2-3 months. It is necessary to wash your baby up to six months with the use of cosmetics not more often than once every 7-10 days, then you can carry out bathing procedures with soap and shampoo once every 5-7 days.

Importantly, that cosmetics were natural and hypoallergenic, including wet wipes. For the little ones, choose cosmetics for the newborns. Carefully examine the composition and shelf life of each product, checking that the product is age-appropriate. When washing, take a soft sponge or napkin that will not scratch or damage the delicate skin of the baby.

The first bath is carried out at a temperature of 36.6-37 degrees Celsius, starting with five to seven minutes. Then the time in the water is gradually increased and the temperature is reduced. The air temperature should be about 25 degrees Celsius. Then the baby won't overcool and won't freeze after bathing or, on the contrary, won't overheat.

Before each bathing the bath is washed with safe detergents. This is done with soap, soda, neutral liquid soap, gel for children or vinegar.

More information on how to clean the bath before bathing a newborn baby, read here. And then we'll look at the basic bathing rules.

We'll learn how to bathe your baby correctly and how often you should bathe your baby depending on your age.

Neonatal bathing rules

  • The first bath is performed for five minutes in the evening in boiled water with a temperature of 36.6-37 degrees;
  • Then the water temperature is gradually reduced by one degree in 5-7 days, and the bathing time, on the contrary, is increased. The baby can bathe for half an hour already;
  • Temperature of air in the bathroom should be about 25 degrees;
  • Wipe the newborn baby with wet wipes or wet towels several times a day, bathe in a baby bath with boiled water if necessary
  • It is recommended to bathe the child more often in the heat, with strong sweating and diaper spots, skin irritations;
  • When the umbilical cord wound heals, at 3-4 weeks the child can begin to bathe in a regular adult bath with running water;
  • Wash the child with soap and shampoo is not recommended more than once a week. And the shampoo is only used after two or three months. Before that, the baby's head is washed with baby soap;
  • Use only hypoallergenic cosmetics and detergents with natural compositions that are suitable for the baby by age;
  • After two to three months, they include swimming exercises;
  • The herbal supplements in the form of a sequence, chamomile or marigold can be used after 3-4 months, coniferous-salt baths are made for children over six months of age. But be careful, the components can cause allergies in the child!;
  • Before bathing, be sure to wash the bath with soda, laundry soap or other safe products.

Bathing a newborn baby in the first month

In the first weeks of life, the baby needs special care and attention, because the baby's body only adapts to the new conditions. The baby should not bathe in normal running water or in an adult bath until the umbilical cord wound heals. It's usually for the second or third week. During this period, the baby is bathed in a special children's bath or simply wiped with wet wipes.

In the first days of life it is enough to wipe the crumb with wet hypoallergenic napkins or a soft towel soaked in boiled water. Then the baby can begin to bathe in a baby bath. In this case too, only boiled water with a temperature of about 37 degrees above zero is used. The first bath should not exceed five minutes.

For bathing, rinse and prepare the bath. Fill up the boiled water and wait for it to cool down to the desired temperature. Then undress the crumb, hold it on the handles and press it against you. It's important that he calms down and knows you're here. Immerse your baby in the water gradually and carefully.

An advance prepare a table where you will wipe your baby after bathing. Put a diaper or sheet on, wrap a bathing crumb in a warm terry towel. Do not rub the child's skin, but soak the moisture slightly.

Don't forget to treat the umbilical cord wound. To do this, soak your stomach with a towel or dry cloth. If the navel still has a clothespin, carefully remove it.

Dip a cotton swab into hydrogen peroxide 3%, carefully remove the crust and then carefully treat each skin area with peroxide.

The clothespin is also treated with peroxide and wiped dry with a cotton pad. After it can be treated with 70% alcohol to increase protection against infections and bacteria. Then the crumbs can be lubricated with lotion or baby oil to moisturise and soften the skin. After that, put on a diaper and clothes or wrap the baby in a diaper.

Remember, it is not recommended to put a diaper on under the diaper!

Bathing baby after a month

When your baby turns 3-4 weeks old, you can start bathing in a regular adult bath. However, it needs to be handled more carefully! But many parents even after a month prefer to use a baby bath. It's not surprising, because it's very comfortable. It is also more hygienic.

If you bathe a crumb in an adult bath, you can use a children's slide or hammock. This will simplify the procedure, because mom or dad, who washes the baby, will not have to lean too low to the child. Besides, the baby, being in a hammock or on a hill, will not slide on a bath.

After month water does not necessarily boil any more. The water temperature is reduced by one degree every week and the bathing time is gradually increased to 15-20 minutes. The suitable water temperature for a child is 36 degrees per month, up to 32 degrees per month.

For children over two to three months it is already possible to practice special swimming exercises. This will further strengthen muscle and immunity. The baby won't be afraid of water and will learn to swim faster. With a long evening bath, the baby eats well before going to bed, falls asleep quickly and sleeps quietly overnight.

Bathing the baby can already be done every day, and soap and other products – about once a week. It's important to rinse every wrinkle of the baby. It's better to water a child with a bucket. If the crumb is afraid of water and capricious, use a variety of toys. They'll help you relax and distract yourself because bathing a newborn baby can be a stressful experience.

Bathing a child after six months

Kid six months or older can already be safely bathed in an adult bath using children's detergent, exercise in swimming and perform many exercises. The baby can swim after 1-2 days, using soap and shampoo – once every 5-7 days. A suitable water temperature for a half-year-old crumb is considered to be about 30 degrees Celsius, and for a child per year it is already 25.

In this age, they begin to use additives in the bath. Especially useful for children coniferous baths. It's a safe and effective way of strengthening immunity. In addition, needles help to improve sleep and soothe, improve skin condition, eliminate rashes and diaper, and are useful for the treatment of respiratory and nervous diseases.

Baths for children with valerian or motherwort addition effectively help with nervous disorders, severe stress and insomnia.

In case of severe spasms and colic, a bath with fennel is made, and in case of severe diaper and irritations on the skin – with marigold, sequel or chamomile.

Attention! The length of the newborn bath should be at least 65 centimetres.

  • Wash the baby's hands and feet, releasing them from the thin diaper wrapped in the newborn. Then cover your baby again with a diaper so that he doesn't get cold;

    How to bathe a newborn baby for the first time

    Bathing features of a newborn baby

    on Bebeshka.info ” Young mother

    1123 (26 per week) / 13.10.16 09:00

    When a tiny baby comes into the house, young mothers have to learn to take care of their newborns step by step. When the baby turns a few days old, the moment will come for his first bath. This procedure is only remotely similar to that required by an adult, so it needs to be prepared carefully and in advance.

    What does a baby need to bathe for?

    Bathing a newborn is not an adult whim, but an important matter with its own objective reasons:

    • the baby is calmed down by warm water;
    • they have their first experience of hardening the body;
    • the baby's skin is cleaned;
    • staying in the water environment makes it easier for the baby to adapt to the environment.

    The most suitable time for swimming

    It is well known how positively the availability of a daily routine affects our lives. This is why children should also be taught a stable schedule from childhood that promotes a healthy lifestyle. This is also true for procedures that are carried out with newborns.

    Very often young mothers are interested in which day after discharge from the hospital the baby can be bathed. This depends primarily on the condition of the navel and the healing process of the newborn.

    Until recently, it was thought that the baby could be redeemed for the first time after the navel healed completely, which happens in the second week after the birth of the baby. Before that, in order to remove food remains and perspiration from the baby's body, it was allowed to use a napkin or towel soaked in boiled water.

    Now the first bath is allowed on the fifth day after delivery. In order to get an accurate answer, the mother should show the baby to the paediatrician, who will examine him and give a specific recommendation.

    Most often parents bathe their newborns in the evening, and this is the right thing to do as the warm water has a relaxing effect on the babies and they sleep harder on the night after bathing.

    This is why the first bath should also be timed to coincide with the evening. However, when the child grows up a little and will be happy to play and play in the water, it will start to over-excite, so that the time interval between bathing and sleeping should be increased.

    What do I need to swim?

    Of course, no one bathes in the big bath for all the members of the newborn's family, and there are different reasons for that:

    • insufficient cleanliness of the bath;
    • too large size;
    • staying cold too slippery side walls;

    • uncomfortable position for mom during bathing.

    Therefore, care should be taken to buy a small plastic bathtub in which the baby can swim much more comfortably
