4 weeks of pregnancy: what is happening, signs and feelings
4 week of pregnancy: what does it look like and what is happening to the fetus, changes in the mother's body + reviews
The first month of carrying is the most responsible month. Exposure to harmful factors can lead to serious fetal abnormalities and even an undeveloped pregnancy.
The expectant mother should be sensitive to her condition, and only see a doctor at this time if there are complaints.
What happens to the foetus in the 4th week of pregnancy and how does the woman feel? The basic parameters of this period are schematically shown in the following table.
Table – Interesting facts
|From conception||4 week|
|Time by month||6 weeks|
|How many months||1,5|
|Embryo sizes||1 cm|
|Weight of the pregnant woman||Depends on the severity of toxicity|
Embrio in 4 weeks of pregnancy (from the moment of conception), looks as follows:
- head, torso and limbs – there is already a clear separation;
- on the head are visible – eyes, nostrils, upper and lower jaws;
- features of the face, nose – begin to form;
- upper extremities – fully formed, fingers are visible, but their fist cannot be compressed by the baby yet;
- lower extremities – also developed with the feet;
- lower extremities – are already developed/li>
- intestines – actively formed, may slightly protrude with the formation of physiological omphalocele;
- umbilical cord – formed, connects the crumb with the placenta and the mother;
- sex tubercle – already there is, and there is a gradual formation of male or female genitalia.
li>heart – becomes four-chamber, blood circulation on the vessels is intensive;
In an ultrasound, the fetal egg is clearly visible at the uterine wall with the embryo. The placenta phase continues. The quality of the mother-fertility placenta system determines how well the pregnancy will develop.
Size of the fetal egg in the 4th week of pregnancy is already more than 21 mm in diameter, and the fetus in it – about 1 cm. Inside the fetal vesicle there is a yolk sac that functions for up to 12 weeks as a midwife.
Don't notice the pregnancy at 4 weeks is difficult: changes in the body relate to the appearance of the woman and her behavior, social adaptation, sensations.
Palatinate skin associated with reduced blood pressure, progesterone background and toxicity is frequently noted. The mammary glands are getting bigger. My breasts swell and even hurt so much that I can't sleep on my stomach. The nipples and the area of the areola become darker, but the white line of the abdomen is not yet visible.
The front abdominal wall loses its tone and the relaxed loops of the intestine with a tendency to bloat create a “picture of pregnancy”. Therefore, girls note that their stomach has already appeared in the second month of pregnancy, but this is not due to the growth of the uterus and fetus in it (embryo is still the size of beans), but due to a decrease in overall muscle tone.
At this point, we can note an improvement in the condition of hair and nails, less care is required for them.
For others, changes in women's behaviour are visible.
- Nausea, vomiting. She doesn't just show up in the morning. It can be provoked by various smells of food, sharp perfume aromas, even natural human pheromones, which are now more clearly perceived.
- Changing taste preferences. Often “skinny” begin to eat “out of it”, sometimes the appetite falls, the girl can lose weight. Pregnant women can be tilted to salty and sweet at the same time (e.g. herring and “snack” cakes). Salivation may occur.
- Indegressiveness and tearfulness. In the first trimester, girls become very impressionable, sentimental, easy to influence and do not think about the consequences. Frequent mood swings are characteristic. One minute you can cry and laugh, and without a reason. Some people are becoming more irritable – actions that they have never noticed before make them angry and nervous.
- Fast fatigue. It's much harder to bear the physical strain of the past. I want to sleep longer, move less and stay calm. Night shift work must be paused.
- Lost attention. Pregnant people find it harder to do work that requires a high level of concentration. The ability to remember large amounts of information is somewhat reduced.
- Decreasing libido. There is often a temporary decline in interest in sex. Sometimes the natural smells of a sexual partner can increase the nausea that passes by the 12-14th of the week.
These changes are due to a rearrangement of the nervous system. The brain forms the “dominant factor of pregnancy”, which “overshadows” all the functions of the body and slows down the reactions to provide the most comfortable, relaxed conditions for the development of the baby.
Significant changes are made to the internal organs that are subject to additional stress. This is especially noticeable in the presence of chronic diseases. The first month of pregnancy may be a month of exacerbation. Possible violations are presented in the table.
Table – Changes in internal organ function in the fourth week of pregnancy
|Digestive||– Increased heartburn;-stomach pain;- bloating;- tendency to constipation;- periodic colic in the abdomen;- appetite enhancement|
|Breathing||Sense of air shortage|
|Cardiovascular||– Reduction of pressure or difference;- strengthening of the venous leg pattern; – feeling of heaviness in the legs|
|Mineral separating||– Frequent calls to urination;- exacerbation of cystitis, urethrites|
|Nervous||– Headache;- dizziness;- loss of consciousness;- more often in public transport|
Serious changes in a woman's body immediately after pregnancy lead to increased need for some substances and reduced need for others.
And the variability varies depending on the duration of gestation.
Therefore, women who take medicines regularly should always contact the appropriate specialists to correct the dose or even cancel the drugs.
Embrio is genetically foreign to the woman by 50%. In order to endure pregnancy, the body has to suppress the activity of the immune system, which detects foreign material.
This leads to a tendency to respiratory diseases, increasing the likelihood of exacerbation of all chronic infection foci.
Most often have to deal with acute pyelonephritis, pulpitis (dental pulp inflammation).
Pathology in the 4th week of pregnancy
4 week of pregnancy can be marred by a variety of complications. Most often it is a suspicion that the embryo has stopped developing or is threatened with miscarriage. It's a little less common to have an ectopic pregnancy. (The latter manifests itself in most cases immediately after the delay, as soon as the 4th week of pregnancy comes.)
Suspect a frozen pregnancy according to the following criteria
- greatest blood flow from the genital tract;
- toxicosis symptoms – abruptly stopped or absent;
- basal temperature – drops;
- absence of embryo – and its heartbeat in the fetal bubble in the sixth week of obstetrics;
- Fetal heartbeat – less than 100 beats per minute;
- yellow bag – too large (more than 20 mm) or not at all.
Women should understand that it is very difficult to establish an undeveloped pregnancy at such a time. Reviews are full of stories of how a “frozen pregnancy” has turned into a progressive one week later. Therefore, in the presence of complaints or a complicated history of the need for a comprehensive approach – assessed not only the ultrasound picture, but also the level of chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), complaints.
In the fifth to sixth week of pregnancy in case of violation of the implantation process may occur spontaneous miscarriages. The symptoms are as follows:
- bottom of the abdomen and lumbar pain/pulling;
- blood stains on the underwear or bleeding;
- feeling of a “stone” in the abdomen due to uterine tone.
Additional uterine cavity scraping or medication for abortion should be performed when the pregnancy is aborted (aborted on the move) or when the cavity is frozen. The uterus itself can no longer “cleanse”, as in the second or third week of pregnancy.
Pregnancy can be confirmed in the following ways:
- Small pelvic ultrasound;
- Pregnancy test;
- HCG blood;
- Basal temperature.
All the usual check-up by a gynecologist already allows you to determine the exact cause of the menstruation delay. When examined, the enlarged uterine body is determined, it has a soft consistency. But the uterus hasn't changed its position yet – if it was in retroflexio (behind), it's still there. Emissions are normal, white, unbridled. The results of the studies are presented in more detail in the table below.
Table – How to confirm fourth week pregnancy
|Pregnancy test||Clear second stripe||Barely noticeable second stripe|
|Blood analysis on hCG||2000 – 30000 MME/L||Less than 1000|
|Basal temperature||Higher 37 C||Normal|
|Uzium (vaginal)||Fertile egg with embryo, heartbeat||No embryo or no heartbeat|
After IVF, the figures are the same. In multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets), the hCG rate in the 4th week of pregnancy will always be higher than normal, as it is produced by two embryos.
Many women are wondering when they should see a gynecologist if they find a positive pregnancy test. If nothing's bothering you, you can postpone your visit until the eighth to tenth week of midwifery. In the following cases, it is necessary to make an appointment immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy:
- problems with embryo – there have been frozen abortions, miscarriages, multiple abortions;
- < chronic diseases - the drugs used need to be corrected, and the possibility and safety of the embryo need to be consulted;
- something is worrying – if there are brown secretions in the 4th week of pregnancy, abdominal or lower back pain, vomiting more than three times a day.
If the expectant mother feels well and does not have serious chronic illnesses (e.g. heart disease, diabetes mellitus), there is no need to undergo further examinations before being registered. Otherwise, a competent examination can only be prescribed by a physician, taking into account the existing pathology.
Signs of pregnancy at week 4 (from the time of conception) include vivid symptoms of toxicosis, changes in the woman's behavior and even her appearance.
Most of these transformations are associated with a change in the hormonal background with a predominance of progesterone.
Ultrasound at 4 weeks of pregnancy without any difficulty should show not only the fetal egg, but also the embryo with a heartbeat of 160-180 beats per minute.
Everything started only at the beginning of this week… although I knew long ago that I got pregnant… I started to get sick in the chest (when I take off my bra almost in tears), in the mornings I was nauseous until lunchtime, and from 3-4 weeks I slept like a gopher in the winter, I could sleep asleep – now it seems to have let go, though by the evening I am very tired ((((((<<)/p>
Hi. Last month's deadline is 5 weeks and 3 days. I just found out today. The test is striped. Feelings… The nipples are painful and the heartburn bothers me more… Whatever I eat… As long as it doesn't puke, it does. I've been yawning all day and throwing it into the heat. I can't believe…
4 weeks pregnant
In obstetric practice, the fourth week of pregnancy is two weeks of pregnancy from conception. The actual pregnancy has already begun, the embryo is still classified as an embryo, but it is already fixed in the uterus.
Now its development is inevitable, and with each new week, including the 4th week, the woman will feel a gradual increase in her new life. In the meantime, the first 4 weeks of pregnancy is usually almost invisible to the woman.
Although in some cases the pregnancy is not yet strongly and implicitly indicated.
Some signs and symptoms of pregnancy in the 4th week are similar to those before menstruation. For example, a woman may notice irritability and nervousness, rapid fatigue. In rare cases, a change in taste preferences and slight nausea may be added to everything else, especially due to the intolerance of certain smells.
Feelings at 4 weeks of pregnancy
Women's emotional background is often altered: if some women have not been aware of the presence of pregnancy for 4 weeks, others may feel much more pronounced at 4 weeks of pregnancy.
Welfare, unjustified resentfulness, increased emotional response to irritants – all this may indicate that a woman's embryo will “settle down” in her womb and become a little man in the future.
Separate changes are taking place in the 4th week of pregnancy: breast swelling, sensitivity and painful nipples are observed.
Again, these changes may be due to premenstrual syndrome if the woman does not yet know about the pregnancy.
In fact, the breast changes in the 4th week of pregnancy due to hormonal changes in the body, adaptation to new conditions of further functioning.
All changes that occur in the body, a woman who is not aware of the pregnancy “writes off” for her next period. And just in time for the 4th week of pregnancy, according to anatomy laws, menstruation should begin, but… Due to successful fertilization and subsequent insertion into the uterus of the fertilized egg, there is no period in the 4th week of pregnancy.
There is a delay, which can also be considered as one of the symptoms and signs of pregnancy in the 4th week. In some cases, a pregnant woman may have bleeding that has nothing to do with her period.
This is the so-called implantation bleeding that occurs due to the attachment of a blastocyst (embryo for 5-6 days of development) to the uterine wall.
Not just a delay in menstrual discharge and poor blood flow can be replaced by a fourth week of pregnancy. Excreta in the 4th week of pregnancy may also be more abundant, whitish or transparent and odorless.
This situation is also due to hormonal rearrangement and increased blood flow. However, only excreta in the 4th week of pregnancy are considered normal if they are colorless (although they may be white) and odorless and have a thick consistency.
Bloody, brown, painful excreta, accompanied by back or lumbar pain, usually have nothing to do with pregnancy.
Bleeding and miscarriage
How and bleeding at week 4 of pregnancy is usually taken by a woman in ignorance of her new position in her period. Bleeding at this minimum time is usually a miscarriage in the 4th week of pregnancy.
It is painless, the woman usually does not even realize she was pregnant and takes the bleeding in the 4th week of pregnancy for menstruation.
Many unfavorable factors, such as a feverish infectious disease, alcohol abuse, and excessive physical activity, can lead to pregnancy freezing, embryo death, and subsequent miscarriage in the 4th week of pregnancy.
Such bitter consequences may come to the woman if the pregnancy was not planned and expected, because the pregnancy test at 4 weeks of pregnancy is usually negative.
The fact is that despite some increase in the blood of chorionic gonadotropin, there is still not enough of it in the urine.
And therefore the pregnancy test in the 4th week of pregnancy may not yet “recognize” an already existing pregnancy.
USI in the 4th week of pregnancy, in turn, is able to show the yellow body of the pregnancy, which gradually increases in size, nourishing the embryo before the formation and full functioning of the placenta.
Among other things, the task of the yellow body is also the production of progesterone – the hormone responsible for the preservation of pregnancy. In addition to the yellow body, highly sensitive ultrasound machines in the 4th week of pregnancy are able to detect and fix the embryo in the uterus.
Here only such examinations are carried out very rarely: at this stage, women often only suspect their possible “interesting position”, doubting whether it is worth doing the appropriate test.
If the pregnancy test in the 4th week of pregnancy is not yet able to “determine” the presence of the pregnancy, the blood tests on hCG in the 4th week of pregnancy will give a clear positive answer.
After all, at this stage of the embryo's membrane is “secreted” into the bloodstream much more hCG, and the sharply increased level of hCG in the blood becomes a confirmation of the presence of pregnancy.
The same applies to progesterone, which for the normal course of pregnancy actively produces the yellow body.
The uterus in the 4th week of pregnancy
The uterus undergoes changes in the uterus in the 4th week of pregnancy under the influence of progesterone.
The hormone “helps” to settle in the uterus – the embryo – of the uterus due to the active production of progesterone swells, soothes, but does not increase in size yet.
In addition, a special dense mucous membrane is formed in the uterus: it will protect the baby's “house” and its own from infections throughout its development.
Fetal at 4 weeks of pregnancy is still undergoing transformation from a fetal egg into an embryo. Externally, it is similar to a flat disk, which consists of three layers. In the future, they will serve as a basis for the formation of tissues and organs of the baby. Thus, the inner layer will cause the appearance of lungs, liver, digestive system, pancreas.
The middle layer will become the “base” for the formation of the skeleton, kidneys, blood vessels, muscles, heart. The outer layer, in turn, is responsible for the formation of skin, head, nervous system, tooth enamel, hair, eye lenses. In terms of size, the fetus reaches 2 mm in the 4th week of pregnancy and is 5 mm long.
Yes, the embryo is still tiny, but its development is rapid. Thus, at this stage, the so-called “germless organs”, i.e. chorion, amnion and yolk sac, are actively developing. Their main task is to provide nutrition, breathing, biochemical support and a variety of protection for the child.
In the future, chorionion will turn into a placenta, and amnion into a fetal bubble.
Belly aches and pulls the stomach
“The activity of the embryo in terms of development and the body repositioning to the new position of the woman often leads to pain and stomach aches in the 4th week of pregnancy. This situation is explained by the changes that occur in the woman's body.
In addition, during the 4th week of pregnancy, the abdomen often hurts and pulls in women who had previous menstruation and were painful. However, it should be taken into account that the 4 weeks of pregnancy are critical stages, during which the pregnant woman usually had to start her period. Thus, the “pulling” abdomen may also indicate an increase in uterine tone.
Unfortunately, it also happens that the end of the painful and distressing sensations of a deplorable – freezing pregnancy and spontaneous abortion (miscarriage).
A normal, non-hazardous cold in the 4th week of pregnancy can also lead to a freeze in pregnancy. During this period, the embryo is unusually vulnerable and is affected by even the smallest seemingly insignificant factors.
This is only to be frightened and panicked at once: nervous breakdown and psychological stress are in many cases even more damaging to the baby's future than a cold in the 4th week of pregnancy. If the temperature is not high, it is enough just to avoid hiking in crowded places and watch out for a few days at home.
Nasal rinsing with salt water, plentiful drinking in the form of warm tea with honey, coughing – syrup with licorice root will help you to quickly cope with the symptoms of the cold.
And here is the temperature at 4 weeks of pregnancy – about 38 degrees and above – for the development of the embryo is very, very undesirable. High temperatures can have a negative impact on the development of the fetus, and even lead to miscarriage. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare for the subsequent carrying of the baby before pregnancy and to do everything to strengthen the immune system.
Altra-hazardous and alcoholic beverages in the 4th week of pregnancy, which can cause irreversible development of abnormalities in the foetus and another cause of spontaneous abortion.
As mentioned above, all of the baby's organs and systems are laid in an unusually active way, so the alcohol consumed during the 4th week of pregnancy has a significant damaging effect on this process.
Alcohol, as a highly toxic substance, causes significant disturbances in the normal formation and development of the embryo, dramatically increasing the risk of eventually giving birth to a child with malformations and anomalies of all kinds.
Therefore, for those mothers who are interested in giving birth to a healthy and strong child, it is more logical for alcohol to be completely excluded from the diet from the first weeks of pregnancy. Better yet, a few months before the pregnancy, in the process of planning and preparing for the pregnancy.
And sex at 4 weeks of pregnancy is usually no harm. However, this applies to those women who are not at risk of miscarriage.
Another thing is that in the first weeks of pregnancy, the woman is not always aware of her new situation, so sex in the 4th week of pregnancy does not undergo any changes.
Well, of course, you shouldn't ignore the fact that during this period the expectant mother may not be ready for sex anymore: the symptoms and signs of pregnancy in the form of irritability and nervousness, fatigue and severity in the abdomen may already make themselves felt.
Nutrition at 4 weeks of pregnancy
Actual for a woman planning a pregnancy, will be the issue of nutrition at 4 weeks of pregnancy. The fact that the embryo at this time is very susceptible to any negative factors has already been discussed above. One such factor may be the lack of vitamins and minerals necessary for the normal formation and development of the fetus.
So the problem of a healthy and balanced diet takes on a new meaning. Nutrition in the 4th week of pregnancy is based on the consumption of only natural products, products containing sufficient amounts of vitamins and trace elements. Smoked, canned, semi-finished, fatty and salty food, sweets should be left in the past.
It is desirable to exclude from the diet and “artificial” products – with all sorts of dyes, flavors, food additives, sweet and colored soda. Priority is given to lean meat, dairy products, porridges, vegetables and fruits, fresh and natural food.
We should also forget about diets and unloading days: for the fetus, the lack of nutrients and nutrients can be detrimental, at least – delays its formation, development and growth.
4 week of pregnancy: what happens, signs and feelings
In the 4th week of pregnancy, the implantation of the fetal egg into the uterine wall continues and the formation of the embryo begins in parallel, which after some time will turn into a fetus and then into a newborn baby. The expectant mother is not yet aware of her new life, but very soon both the pregnancy test and the ultrasound will give positive results.

What is this implantation?
In normal, sperm fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube. It takes an average of 6-7 days for the foetal egg to travel from the fallopian tube to the uterus.
Once it has entered the uterine cavity, the foetal egg (at this stage it is called blastocyst) sticks to the inner uterine membrane (endometrium) and begins to release the enzymes needed to penetrate the uterine wall deeper. This is implantation.
In the process of implantation, the trophoblast (formed from the outer cells of the blastocyst) begins to actively share and transform into a similarity of villas, which are gradually introduced deep into the endometrium. This is the starting point for formation of chorionic villas – the structure responsible for providing the embryo with all the necessary substances until the appearance of the placenta.
